Grill Safe, Grill Smart: Grilling Tips for Seniors

We are officially one month into summer and for many, warmer weather calls for BBQs and grilling. Grilling is a blast and a good way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air, but staying safe is key.

Even if you’ve been a grillmaster for years, it’s a good idea to refresh yourself with essential grill safety tips. Proper precautions can prevent accidents, injuries, and fires, allowing everyone to enjoy delicious food and good times without any worry!

Keep your Grill Clean
This may come as an obvious tip, but it’s a very important one. 20% of all structure and yard fires take place due to dirty grills. This happens because grease builds up. Make sure that before you use your grill, give it a light cleaning. Even if you’ve washed it after the last time you used it — never want to miss anything!

Store in a Safe Location
Below are best practices when it comes to storing your grill:

  • Keep grill at least 10 feet away from your home or garage
  • Keep grill off uneven surfaces
  • Do not keep grill in the area of anything combustible like mulch, wooden planters
  • Do not keep bag of charcoal near the grill
  • Be mindful where you keep your walker/cane when using the grill

Do Not Leave Grill Unattended
Always keep an eye on the grill. Left alone could cause serious damage like a fire. If you have any young children around, make sure the area is in a place where they do not have access to it or in the way of your path walking to the grill. We don’t want any accidents!

Don’t Grill Solo
It’s always best to have someone with you when grilling. They can keep an eye out and help grab ingredients and items for you so you don’t have to leave the grill unattended. For seniors with limited mobility, having someone nearby is especially pertinent.

General Gas Grill Tips

  • Inspect hoses and connections before each use
  • No flame? Turn off the tank and grill and call a professional for help.
  • If you smell gas while cooking, step away immediately and call for help.
  • Do not turn on the gas with the lid closed

General Charcoal Grill Tips

  • Since these types of grills tend to stay hot hours after use, make sure there are no flammable items nearby
  • Check for rust before each use
  • Do not add any starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

Happy grilling and stay safe!
