Nura Aly, AmeriGlide scholarship winner

Raleigh, NC – August 23, 2010 – AmeriGlide, an online retailer of stair lifts and other mobility products for disabled individuals, is proud to announce the Fall 2010 winner of the AmeriGlide Achiever Scholarship. After reviewing a number of great entries, the scholarship award committee has selected Nura Aly, a student in the University of DePaul's music department.

“We read a number of stories that touched every single one of us,” said David Ward, a member of the scholarship award committee. “There were a lot of heart wrenching stories this year, but Nura’s story of being a trendsetter not only moved me, but the entire scholarship committee.” Nura Aly is a student at the University of DePaul, where she is currently studying music as a violinist. Her award-winning essay describes the trials and tribulations that she has had to face, being the first ever wheel chair bound student at DePaul University. AmeriGlide is proud to award her the fall 2010 AmeriGlide Achiever scholarship.

Applicants were asked to compose an essay of 500 words or more describing what areas of their school would benefit from improved accessibility and how would they improve them. Applicants were also asked what areas of their school they feel have excellent accessibility and why.

Nura’s essay highlighted her experience as the first ever wheelchair-bound student at DePaul University. “I knew after seeing the campus that things needed to be changed in terms of accessibility, but I was willing to talk to the administration and get things resolved.”

“As the first student in a wheelchair, I have had to literally forge a trail; perhaps my participation will help building planners be more aware and careful in including accessibility planning,” Nura wrote in her essay. “My hope is that maybe I or other students with disabilities can make suggestions to the committee planning these new buildings so that other students with disabilities in the future may consider and decide to come there.” Nura Aly is the fourth winner of the AmeriGlide Achiever Scholarship. The scholarship awards $500.00 to full-time college students who use a wheelchair. The scholarship contest will be held again next year, and a new recipient will be chosen in the fall of 2011.
